Strategic priorities
DISCH AG is a single-site pharmaceutical contract manufacturer in Othmarsingen, Switzerland, founded in 1903 and re-shaped over four ownership eras that include Nestlé and Ricola before the 2015 transition to RUPAAL Finanzholding. The company makes hard-boiled lozenges, soft chews, pastilles and toffees for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical clients, and since 2003 has set itself a target of 80% pharmaceutical output. The whole operation, from R&D laboratory to finished product, sits inside the Othmarsingen facility.

Across the same period the manufacturing base is being modernised. The current site mixes confectionery equipment inherited from the Nestlé and Ricola eras with newer pharmaceutical lines, and the company has framed its Industry 4.0 work as retrofitting legacy machinery with IoT sensors and OPC UA (Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture) connectivity to support 'Plug & Produce' modularity. Where each equipment generation speaks its own protocol, the data path is rebuilt per line. Agreeing a single plant-level protocol and information model up front turns the next equipment purchase into a continuous extension of the same data path instead of a new integration project.

Validation at DISCH requires documented proof of production processes, equipment cleaning and analytical methods; today this evidence is held in paper logbooks that slow the A to Z service timeline. Swissmedic's 2022-2024 GCP (Good Clinical Practice) inspection report names incomplete source documentation as a frequent industry finding.
When the audit trail is compiled by hand from paper records, every inspection is a reconstruction exercise. Capturing the same evidence at the instrument and the workstation as it is produced turns the audit trail into a query over a system rather than an assembly job before the visit.
